Election Day

Today is election day.  The day that we are supposed to vote for those that represent our views, values and ideals.  Those that we trust to change things for the better and make us proud.  Representatives that we hold in high regard.   Errrrr . . . where exactly are those people?

My memory of elections goes all the way back to Truman and Eisenhower when I was a child.  I have seen many,  many elections,  but I do not remember any politicians that meet the aforementioned qualifications.  Not a single one.

As a Christian,  I find it even harder to find candidates that represent my beliefs,  morals and worldview from either party.  In fact,  it seems that politicians in general,  say and promise anything they think voters want to hear just to get elected,  and then precede to do exactly as they please,  or even worse,  what special interest groups pressure them into doing.  And sometimes for personal gain.  In fact,  often for personal gain.  The media is constantly reporting on corrupt politicians and their court trials.  If we want to be totally honest,  the political system is a sham,  and those elected do not represent “We The People“.  They represent their party interests and their own reelection.  The ones that can lie the most convincingly win elections.

If I understand how the system is supposed to work,  politicians are supposed to be “one of us“,  our peers.  I think you would be hard pressed to find politicians that are not attorneys or wealthy business people.  How exactly are they our peers and how can they represent the majority when they are part of the few elite?  The “ruling class“??

So what is a Christian to do?  Not vote?  I don’t think so.  I believe that we have a responsibility to make our voices heard.  But how.  In reality,  our only option to vote for the lessor of 2 evils.

We are to understand that in this world there are only 2 people groups.  Believers and unbelievers,  and unbelievers can never grasp the Christian world view,  and even some who claim to be Believers  often seem to act anything but, once in office.  So I believe that the only thing we can do is vote for those that at least claim to stand for things we believe in,  pray for them,  and put them in God’s hands.

Let us remember that God allows even bad leaders to have positions of authority so that He can use them to bring about His will.  We need to focus on the bigger picture and keep our eye on the prize!

“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God”  Romans 13:1
